Review: Hilton Da Nang Vietnam

With the first leg of our Cathay First Class flight departing from Da Nang International Airport, myself and Jack took the opportunity to spend a couple of nights in the vibrant city. While I couldn’t find an official Hilton Da Nang opening date, coverage of the opening I found was dated 20th December 2018, so we thought we’d jump on the opportunity to review Hilton’s latest and greatest, just months after opening its doors.

The hotel presented beautifully and I took some wonderful shots to showcase that. Unfortunately, I lost the SD card so had to ask Hilton for some images. Anyhow, my thoughts below on a very pleasant stay.

Hilton Da Nang Review

COST AND POINTS

Total Cost: AU$322.66
Average Per Night: AU$161.33

Although the new Hilton Da Nang is rated as a 4-star property, being brand new it presents above that, and at an average price of AU$161.33 for a Twin Room, it’s an appealing package.

Hilton Honours members can redeem a Standard Room at the Hilton Da Nang Hotel for 38,000 Honours points. American Express cardholders can also transfer Membership Rewards Points to their Hilton Honours Accounts at a rate of 1:2, requiring a transfer of 19,000 Amex Rewards Points to redeem a night. While it is possible to make such a redemption, when you take into account the price of the room, it is a shocking use of rewards points. To put it in perspective, I recently transferred 10,000 Amex Rewards Points to Cathay Pacific Asia Miles to cover a $1199 flight.

Keep your points for big savings and incredible experiences.

LOCATION

Address: 50 Bach Dang St, Hai Chau District 550000, Da Nang, Vietnam

Being my first trip to Vietnam, and nothing more than a quick stopover before our First Class Cathay Pacific trip to NYC, my knowledge of Da Nang and the surrounding area was non-existent, and to be honest, I didn’t plan a thing.

Hoi An Streets
On the streets of Hoi An.

Over the two nights, we walked along the famous Bach Dang St and beyond to a handful of bars in the Hai Chui District, touted to be the cultural centre of the city. A trip to the ancient town of Hoi An takes 45mins to an hour in a GRAB car and is highly recommended. The hotel is also a short 10-minute drive from Da Nang International Airport, and five minutes from Da Nang Beach.

CHECK-IN

The recently completed Hilton Da Nang has a rather confusing driveway which our cab driver entered the wrong way. Once we’d pulled up, we were met by a porter who assisted with our bags, then greeted with a welcome drink and checked in by a smiling staff member who spoke impeccable English.

ROOM

Twin Room looking out to River Han.

The Hilton Da Nang is fresh, just how I like it. We booked a basic Twin Room from the 223 on offer, located on the 14th floor. The polished wood and textured bed heads and wall coverings give off a subtle Vietnamese vibe steering the aesthetic away from too corporate. Being so new, the room looked immaculate, as did the bathroom which featured a private toilet and sizeable tub, with plush pillows and mattresses offering a delicious nights rest. A long desk running into a mini bar and wardrobe could easily accommodate you for a day’s work.

EATING

Brasserie Nam Da Nang
Brasserie Nam.

Hilton Da Nang has a number of dining options but we didn’t dine at any of them. However, I did order a Nasi Goreng for room service on the first that comes from the Brasserie Nam’s kitchen, which offers a wide variety of Vietnamese, Asian and Western specialities. It was yum and reasonably priced (for room service).

River Han Da Nang
The view from The Sail looking down onto Han River.

On level 28, The Sail gives guests a fine dining option, with a lounge and cocktail bar to whet the whistle. While the setting is absolutely epic with panoramic views of the Han River and out towards the East Vietnam Sea, unfortunately, the beers are Australian prices, and when they cost 30% of that price in every bar on Bach Dang St, it’s hard to justify more than two – even if the free nuts are scrummy.

FACILITIES

I didn’t use the gymnasium during my stay but I made sure to poke my head in for a look and it was one of the most palatial hotel gyms I’ve ever seen, so bravo Hilton. On the same floor as the gym, there is also a number of function spaces and meeting rooms.

I did pop out to the pool though, which has the potential to be very pleasant but currently looks straight at a large building under construction. It may look like paradise in the photo below, but directly behind the photographer is a construction site which is very loud and dusty!

There’s also a Hilton Da Nang Executive Lounge which is accessible when booking Executive Rooms with benefits including complimentary continental breakfast and evening refreshments. Our room choice didn’t grant us entry.

SERVICE

The Vietnamese are extremely friendly people and throughout our stay we were greeted with nothing but friendly faces, eager to assist. At The Sail on Level 28, we were served by a friendly chap who was a little too keen to get us another round, perhaps due to boredom more than anything, as it was rather quiet. However, not a bad word to say!

GOOD STAY?

As I said in my Moxy Hotel Chelsea Review, the newer the hotel, the better. Not only is everything immaculate, but the staff are also often new and looking to make a great impression, which in the case of the Hilton Da Nang, rang true.

I understand you pay Western prices in Western hotels but I would have spent a lot more time drinking beers on level 28 and even considered dining at The Sail had they been more reasonable.

For the price, it was really hard to fault the Hilton Da Nang, or what I experienced of it. It’s probably a touch too far from Hoi An if that’s a focus for your trip but as a base to check out the vibrant city of Da Nang, or for a quick layover, it ticks all of the boxes.
