The redesign and repurposing of the former Trans World Airlines terminal at JFK International Airport, into the retro TWA Hotel, will boast an incredible rooftop infinity pool and bar overlooking runway 4L/22R.
The building, designed by Eero Saarinen, opened in 1962 and closed in 2001 when TWA airlines filed for a third and final bankruptcy before being acquired by American Airlines.
The new TWA Hotel reimagines the iconic terminal with the addition of two towers either side featuring 512 classic aviation-inspired rooms and floor-to-ceiling, full-width soundproof windows overlooking the tarmac.
Due to open on May 15, the highly anticipated TWA Hotel’s crowning feature is a 19.5-metre long infinity pool, said to have been inspired by the infinity edge pool at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes.
The pool area will also feature a bar, operated by the folks behind Mr Purple at the Indigo Hotel in LES as well as an observation deck. Open 365 days a year, the TWA Hotel pool will transform into a giant spa during winter with water temp rising to 37.8 Celsius.
Hotel guests get free access to the pool during their stay, while visitors without a booking, either from the city or during a layover, can make reservations at the Pool Bar for some premium plane spotting.
Inside, the TWA Hotel channels the glamour of 1960s aviation with warm wood accents, authentic Knoll furnishings, Hollywood-style bathrooms, custom TWA amenities and 4½ inch thick glass windows to eradicate the noise.
